Types of Inspection
1.1.1. Initial inspections
Inspection of all electrical equipment, systems and installations before they are brought into service based on detailed inspections. The requirements are covered in IEC 60079-14.
1.1.2. Periodic inspections
Inspection of all electrical equipment, systems and installations carried out on a routine basis which may be visual, close or detailed
1.1.3. Sample inspections
Inspection of a proportion of the electrical equipment, systems and installations which may be visual, close or detailed. The size and composition of all samples shall be determined with regard to the purpose of the inspection.
1.1.4. Continuous supervision
Frequent attendance, inspection, service, care and maintenance by skilled personnel utilizing the visual or close inspections. Where the installation falls outside the capability for continuous supervision it shall be subject to periodic inspection.
1.1.5. Grades of Inspection
All installed plant apparatus in hazardous areas must be routinely inspected and any defects corrected.
There are three grades of inspection:
- Visual
- Close
- Detailed
When inspections are undertaken:
- New equipment; new equipment sets the standard so must be installed defect free.
- Periodically; planned events – quarterly, 6-monthly, annually
- Shutdowns; planned event – 2-yearly, 3-yearly, 5-yearly
